Julie Paul

Julie Paul
Julie Paul, a New Zealand native, thinks she's pretty lucky. She loves dealing cards, meeting people and visiting all sorts of amazing places. Who knows, maybe some of that luck will rub off the next time she deals you a hand. It certainly wouldn't be the first time!
What's the difference between being a dealer onboard a ship versus on land?
On land, guest service isn't really that important. It's all about dealing as fast as you can, getting the money as quick as you can. Onboard it's the exact opposite. The casino is there purely for entertainment rather than revenue.
Do you just deal blackjack or all different tables?
A lot of us only do certain games. But since I've been in the business for a long time, I do all of them. I do the craps table, roulette, Caribbean stud and blackjack.
Which is your favorite?
Craps. It's everybody's favorite because it's so different. People are always yelling and screaming, which makes it exciting for them, and it gets exciting for us as well.
What's the most you've ever seen someone win at a table?
One time a gentleman won $50,000. He didn't start with that much and he wasn't a seasoned gambler, either. So it was a really big break for us and he was really excited. He went to the future cruise desk the next day and booked a cruise for his whole family. It was quite exciting.
Have you seen anyone hit a jackpot on a slot machine?
Yes. Daily. The bells ring really loud and they make announcements at the cashier's desk that say, "Mr. Jones, you just won $10,000! Congratulations!" and everyone claps. Actually, somebody won $10,000, and it was a big family group too and they booked another cruise.
Any unusual or funny stories?
Occasionally, on the roulette table, you have a "no spin" and what happens is you pick up the ball and sometimes it flies out of the well. One time I did a no spin and the ball flipped out of the well and landed in a lady's cup of tea.
Do you have guests who prefer you as a dealer?
Oh, always. A lot of people have their favorites. They go around and look at the name tags. And it's not that they prefer you as a dealer. It's more superstition. So they go, "Oh, I was lucky with you last night," and follow me around the casino.
What attracted you to the casino business in the first place?
I saw a movie, the movie with Sharon Stone. I remember watching it and it looked so glamorous and exciting. I never thought it would be suitable for me. Then one day, I just decided to try it. Now I would do it for the rest of my life. It's really nice to be able to say I enjoy what I do. I actually love it. It's a passion. And I would never want to do anything else.
