Spain Cadiz Bell Tower Cathedral Aerial
In Cadiz's walled Old Town, the domed Cadiz Cathedral and Torre Tavira both date back to the 18th century. You can also explore a pair of castles, San Sebastian and Santa Catalina, which offer stunning views of the sea below.
Spain Cadiz La Caleta Beach Ocean
Cadiz is home to one of the best beaches in the Andalusia region: La Caleta, where the Phoenicians are said to have landed. Take a dip in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean or simply sun yourself on the golden sands, which are shaded by the castle walls as the day goes on.
Although you're unlikely to find any souvenirs at Cadiz Central Market, which largely focuses on fresh produce and meat, there are few better places in the city to experience the life of the locals. Photograph the colorful hauls of seafood vendors or simply admire the haggling prowess of Cadiz residents as they bargain for their groceries.
Bring your appetite to Cadiz, where fresh-grilled seafood options include fish like dorada (sea bream) and lubina (sea bass), and shellfish as tiny as baby squids or as massive as lobster. Cadiz restaurants also offer plenty of pan-Spanish cuisine, from tapas and sangria to some of the freshest paella (seafood stir-fried with saffron rice) that you'll find anywhere in the country.
Leave behind the largely produce-focused stalls of Cadiz Central Market for boutiques along Calles Compañía or Pelota. There you can shop for souvenirs like colorful flamenco fans and dresses, which honor the famous musical and dance tradition from nearby Jerez. Make sure also to sample Manzanilla, a flowery version of famous Cadiz Fino sherry. Its flavor evokes notes of chamomile.
