Known as the Eternal City, Rome is home to historic art, architectural marvels and the world’s most famous amphitheater—all of which draw travelers from around the world. Now, you have a whole new way to take in the iconic history and culture with Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, the first amplified ship to sail from Italy’s capital.

Following a $110 million transformation, Explorer will set course for the Eastern Mediterranean with new thrills like dual racer waterslides and glow-in-the-dark laser tag, as well as a resort style pool and bold, new flavors. When not taking on the amplified adventure on board Explorer, imagine learning how to fight like a gladiator in Rome, losing yourself in Antoni Gaudí’s legendary designs, touring the flower markets of Nice, and combing the ruins of Delos.

This is the summer getaway perfect for friends or that special someone to spend seven or nine nights traversing the best of Italy, Spain, France, the Greek Isles and more (Editor’s Tip: The newly amplified Allure of the Seas will join Explorer in the Western Mediterranean).

All-day Thrills on Deck

Pool days take on a whole new meaning on Explorer’s reimagined top deck. Set against the backdrop of crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, you can catch waves on the FlowRider surf simulator, scale a 40-foot rock wall and get some friendly competition going at The Perfect Storm, a duo of racer waterslides that zooms down three stories in a matter of seconds.

Need to chill after the adrenaline rush? Kick back at the pool on one of the many hammocks, daybeds, casitas or loungers with a Caribbean cocktail from the new, signature bar The Lime & Coconut. The tropical (and truly Instagram-worthy) space has all-day drinks, live music and a rooftop area for a bird’s eye view of the action below. Pro tip: the rooftop is the best seat in the house for movie night. Guests over 16 can also catch some alone time in the serene and rejuvenated Solarium—featuring a pool, hot tub and bar—while travelers of all ages can play mini-golf as they take in breathtaking ocean views.

Creative Culinary Concepts

When it comes to what to eat on board the newly amplified Explorer, the options are endless—your only challenge will be what to try first! You can always start your day with a latte or Frappuccino from Starbucks (yep, the coffee shop accepts gift cards or your Starbucks app). If taste-testing your way through the famed trattorias of Florence or Sicily has you craving more pasta and pizza, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen is the ultimate “Sunday supper” reservation. The new take on our signature Italian restaurant will serve up a reimagined menu of Italian classics with a twist, from hand-tossed pizzas to charcuterie boards, plus a wide selection of wines and limoncellos.

Meanwhile, at Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, everyone can watch their home team play across 52 big-screen TVs as they enjoy ice-cold brews, wings, sliders and other bar fare—not to mention arcade classics, trivia, game tournaments and pool, plus an Owner’s Box VIP area. Johnny Rockets Express is another new hot spot that will serve up American classics like burgers and fries. Pro tip: Grab a spiked shake for dessert!

Also on deck for more eats and a night out on the town are signature Royal Caribbean restaurants, bars and lounges, including Izumi, Chops Grille, Boleros Latin lounge and Schooner Bar.

Adventure for All Ages

When kids and teens aren’t learning through the living history of the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ephesus, Turkey or hiking Mt. Vesuvius in Naples, Italy, they can take part in the reimagined Adventure Ocean kids program or check out the transformed spaces exclusively for teens.

With a major, top-to-bottom makeover, Adventure Ocean will offer an open and imaginative layout where young 6- to 12-year-old guests choose from a variety of immersive experiences based on their interests, while babies and 3- to 5-year-olds each play in their own specially designed spaces. Similarly, teens will enjoy a 360-transformation of their dedicated space that includes an adults-free hangout, where they can catch the latest movies, video games and music, and chill out on the outdoor deck.

The whole crew can join forces at Clash for the Crystal City, the new glow-in-the-dark laser tag challenge that pits the Yetis against the Snowshifters for the claim on a mythical ice city in Studio B. The venue will then transform, letting guests lace up their skates for a spin around the rink – the first and only cruise line with ice-skating rinks at sea. Studio B is just one of many entertainment venues that feature original Royal Caribbean productions, including Broadway musicals, ice skating, live music, comedy shows and much more.

After a thrilling summer in the Mediterranean, Explorer will set sail to the Caribbean. The five- and nine-night Eastern and Southern Caribbean sailings, roundtrip from Miami, will include visits to picture-perfect islands like Labadee, Haiti; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendijk, Bonaire and our private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

This is just a peek of all that awaits on the amplified Explorer of the Seas come May 7, 2020. Book your new, bold European adventure here to wander the cobblestoned streets of centuries past and catch all the excitement on board.
