A Productive Day in the Office

Usually I’m writing about being far away from the office while headquarters is humming along doing the myriad things necessary to support the business. Today is the opposite. Many of my senior colleagues are back in Turku showing off Oasis to journalists from around the world, and I am in the office. So what goes on around here?

I spoke with both Richard Fain and Harri Kulovaara who were in Finland on the new ship today. They sounded extremely pleased with the progress even since we all saw her two weeks ago. Two months and a day until delivery. The big Wow is approaching.

There was a crisis management preparation exercise going on throughout the morning in our training rooms. A lot of upper management was involved. The brand presidents in our company (myself, Dan Hanrahan, Larry Pimentel) expressed our support and appreciation for their participation as they got going this morning. We cannot anticipate everything that might disrupt our world, but there are a lot events and situations that are reasonably foreseeable. We practice dealing with a variety of situations and this clearly helps us even when we encounter a situation we could not have anticipated, such as the implications of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

I discussed several matters with colleagues from different departments that I often don’t have time to pursue. In fact, last night (after the Phillies’ dramatic 10th inning victory over the Pirates), I updated my To Do list in anticipation of having the time today to attack the list. I really don’t like open items on my To Do list.

Today I have a new Blackberry. Not the super fancy version I see advertised on television but good enough for me. It became good enough for me yesterday afternoon when my IT colleagues figured out how to reflect my high score in Brickbreaker on the new unit. Not to mention that it’s smaller and lighter.

These kind of days are always useful for touching base with my key lieutenants such as Barbara Shrut, VP, Finance & Administration, and Diana Block, VP, Revenue Management & Deployment and others.

Beyond the kaleidoscope of work related matters, I signed up for my first 5k race of the new season this Saturday. Yes it’s August in South Florida and the race is in the one park in the region that has hills. But I need a fresh benchmark and in the end all the races are the same. The gun goes off and you try to get to the finish line as fast as you can. My training has been going well so we’ll see. Plus my high school teammate Bob Sweeney is running with me for the first time since the late 1970’s.

Reading your comments on preperation is kind of scarry but reassuring. While I realize the world is less safe today then ever before you hate to envision what a criminal mind is capable of. I guess we should be glad that you have to continually envision.
I will leave you with this thought and it is similar to what you must go through. About the time my wife and I took our first cruise we made an appointment with our lawyer to do our will. He found it humorous asking why, when you are going on cruise vavcation. We told him,it was because we wanted to be prepared. So again I realize security is part of cost and please spare no expense here. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Adam – It was great to read your notes about preparedness. This has been a strong message of mine to my teams. As a Project Manager (PMP) it is certainly one of the most important aspects of our jobs to ensure our work is done properly. In addition, from a family of four that are avid cruisers (and only on RCCL), it is great to read that RCCL takes this aspect of planning so seriously. Thank you for caring for my families safety. Lastly, I’m a lifetime Phillies phan too. Go fighten’ Phils!

    Take care,

    Ed

    Adam:
It will be about 30 years since my first Royal Caribbean cruise on the Song of America, but more importantly it will be 16 years to the day (December 07, 1993) that I met the love of my life on the Majesty of the Seas. I wanted to thank the entire Royal Caribbean team for introducing me to the most incredible girl in the world. I’m booked on the December 5th inaugural cruise on the Oasis, so I’ve been watching and reading your progress with great interest. I am so very confident Adam that the magic that RCCL created for me sixteen years ago, can only be taken to greater heights on the Oasis. I can’t tell you how excited I am to get on board one of the most exciting moments in cruise history. Job well done to you and your entire RCCL team.
