Around the Water Cooler: An Interview with U.S. News

I was recently interviewed by U.S. News for their “Around the Water Cooler” series where they talk with company executives about career advice for employees and managers.  Since I received a fair amount of positive feedback on a blog article earlier this year on a similar topic, I thought you may be interested in the interview where I share my thoughts on the inclusion of foreign language skills on a resume, how to stand out in the office, why continuing to build relationships at work is so important and whether I believe employees should use their allotted vacation days.  The interview is located here.  Do you have career advice you’d like to share?  Please post it in the comments below, or let me know if you agree with my responses.

I always cruise with Royal, have another cruise coming up this Oct. and can’t wait. I do however really miss my fav. ship, the Navigator. Will it ever be sailing out of Florida again ? Since I’m not young anymore :[ I can’t wait too long, lol

Adam your right ….never cruise with the boss… my boss is not the CEO of a mega cruise line…..I never mix pleasure with business…..

One of the issues I’ve been seeing is the feeling on the part of some employees that they have to change employers every couple of years to get ahead. They are always doing their work with one eye on the exit and their next employer. But great companies provide an environment where the potential for long-term careers is recognized and where there is an opportunity to continuously grow within the company.

I know that you celebrated your 25th anniversary at Royal Caribbean last month, as I did at my organization this month. I suspect that when you were finishing law school (and probably worrying about the bar exam) and I was finishing a stint in government, neither of us could have predicted that we’d spend 25 years in the cruise and technology security areas. It’s a great company that makes quarter-century opportunities available.

Congratulations, and as a shareholder, thanks — not only for what you’ve done, but for the organization you’ve done so much to shape, along with Richard and many others — and for what you’ll do in the future. My guess is that you’re not done yet contributing to Royal or to the community, and, like me, not nearly ready to retire.

    Alan
