Ask Adam Blog Series – March 2012 Answers

Spring has arrived and so has the 12th edition of our Ask Adam blog series. Hard to believe it’s already been a year since we started this and we would like to thank everyone for their wonderful questions. If you missed February’s questions please click here, or if you have a question you would like to ask Adam regarding Royal Caribbean news, what he’s been up to or just curious about all things Royal Caribbean, please follow this link to our Facebook discussions page and submit your questions there.

Is there any chance that passengers will be able to bring their pets with them one day onboard Royal Caribbean cruises? – Elyse B.

Currently we allow service animals to accompany guests with disabilities onboard and there is no plan to change our no-pet policy at this time.

Hi Adam, I am 14 and have only been on one cruise (Carnival Sensation) but I would love to go on Oasis of the Seas because the ships are a lot nicer. The prices of Carnival are lower than Royal Caribbean especially since I have the past guest discount. I want your opinion on what to do. – Ben

Ben, I appreciate your interest in Oasis of the Seas. While I don’t want to speak to how other cruise lines price cruise vacations, I can tell you that I firmly believe we offer a great value, even if we are not the lowest priced cruise option. We are a brand known for innovation and that is reflected in how we build our ships. We offer a variety of activities including surfing on our FlowRider, rock wall climbing, competing on our sports deck, meeting other guests in our Adventure Ocean teen program and much more. While each ship class has its own activities and onboard innovation, please know that we are in the process of taking our most popular innovations from the Oasis-class and bringing them to the rest of the fleet. If you aren’t ready to sail on Oasis for your first Royal Caribbean cruise there are several other ships in our fleet to choose from.

Will Royal Caribbean ever consider making Turks and Caicos a port of call? – Colleen C

Thank you for the suggestion. We do not have any plans for Turks and Caicos now but will continue to review as a potential for future deployment.

What lengths do staff onboard Royal Caribbean ships go to in order to deep clean a ship after an outbreak such as the Norovirus? Is Royal Caribbean planning on new measures to reduce the risk of an outbreak? – Scott R.

At Royal Caribbean International we have high health standards for all of our guests and crew. During a sailing, whenever necessary, we conduct enhanced cleaning onboard a ship, to help prevent the spread of any illness. Additionally, in between the end of one cruise and the beginning of the next cruise, we conduct an extensive and thorough sanitizing process onboard the ship and within the cruise terminal, to help prevent any illness from affecting the subsequent sailing.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 21 million cases of acute gastroenteritis each year are due to the Norovirus infection and more than 50% of all food borne disease outbreaks can be attributed to Noroviruses. Only the common cold is more prevalent. Medical experts tell us that the best way to prevent the spread of gastrointestinal illnesses is to simply wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after using the bathroom and before eating anything.

We enjoy cruising to the Norwegian Fjords, but most major cruise lines don’t start cruising there until summer or fall. Locals tell us that the waterfalls are more beautiful in the spring. Any chance Royal Caribbean would consider a Norwegian cruise earlier in the season, or at the end of a repositioning cruise from Florida to Europe? – Jim M.

Hello Jim, Norway is a beautiful country to visit at any time of the year; however the waterfalls are more active earlier in the season as you mention. We will be offering a series of cruises to Norway and the fjords in late spring this year. Specifically Brilliance of the Seas arrives in Amsterdam on May 12, 2012 and offers a 7 Night Norwegian Fjords sailing.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Allure of the Seas or Oasis of the Seas will be moved to Port Canaveral? – James B.

None!

Hi Adam, I love cruising onboard Oasis and Allure. Are there any plans to mix up the itineraries for either ship or changing the home port of one of the ships? – Erik C.

Over the holidays we offered a couple of unique sailings for Allure of the Seas. This allowed us to call on St. Kitts for the first time with this class of ship. I do not expect this to be a regular occurrence but from time to time we will have the opportunity to offer different itineraries and ports of call. In general we are very happy with what the ships are doing on their current itineraries.

What happens if it is time to leave a port and not all the guests are back onboard? Is there an amount of time that you wait for them and then leave? Will it delay the cruise? – Emily M.

If a guest is booked on a Royal Caribbean sponsored excursion and the excursion is running late then the ship will wait for the guests. Any other guests who are not onboard at the time of departure will work with our local port agents to make arrangements to meet the ship at the next port of call. It is up to each individual guest to make sure that they are onboard the ship prior to its departure.

Hi Adam, seeing that Royal Caribbean International is such an innovative company, have you ever considered putting a small craft beer brewery on your ships? Not only is it extremely popular and growing leaps and bounds in a sluggish economy, so many other activities can be offered surrounding the concept. Such as craft beer historical lectures, tastings and evaluations, other craft beer education topics, food pairings, etc. Just a thought! - Jonathan A.

We have certainly explored many initiatives, and we have considered craft brewing however we don’t have any plans to put a craft beer brewery on our ships in the near future. I will point out that our beverage team is keenly aware of the craft beer resurgence, and recently added about 14 craft beers to our English Pub concept, bringing our total beer selection in this venue to the mid 30’s.

Adam, when are we going to see a ship in Port Canaveral to compete with Disney Cruise Ship’s 3 and 4-day cruises? – Christopher B.

Hi Christopher, we have had a long history of offering 3 and 4 night cruises out of Port Canaveral. Monarch of the Seas is now offering this program through April 1 of 2013. We have not yet announced our deployment details beyond that date but will do so in the next month. Please continue to check our 2013 Deployment page.

Is Royal Caribbean thinking about having any special cruises during the Panama Canal’s inaugural season in 2014? If so, will we know ahead of time whether a particular cruise will use the new Post-Panama locks on the Caribbean and Pacific sides, or routed through the current locks? – Jim M.

Thanks for the suggestion Jim. We have not planned the itineraries for this time but this is something that we plan to review.

Why Royal took away the cruises from Puerto Rico in summer time?

    • Eduardo Garcia Perez

As a seasoned (senior) Diamond Crown&Anchor member based in Puerto Rico, I can coment to Mariana’s inquiry about RC’s desition to skip SanJuan from their itinerary. First and major is the pedantic attitude from the current Tourist and Ports Authorities, which make doing busines here and now in PR close to imposible. Second is a logical strategic evation (protection) from the hordes of loud and undiciplined vacationing youths that plague San Juan in summer. A solution to the Authority’s foppish attitude is at hand in November’s election, but I see no simple solution to the Summer Vacation riot ritual.

    what is the sunshine class?

    • Adam

Hi Mariana, you can learn more about Project Sunshine here.

  3. Shawn

    Dear Adam,

I was wondering when Royal Caribbean would announce the class and ship names for the project sunshine? I research your company all the time and after cruising with your company three times in the last 12 months, I wanted to know if you knew if the Majesty of the Seas is going to get a remodel?

    • Adam

Hi Shawn, for the latest on Project Sunshine please click here, and for Majesty of the Seas enhancements, please keep an eye on our Facebook page.

  4. Natasha Thomas

    As European cruises are up
By 15 per cent would it not be prudent to add more ships during summer vacation time
Out of Southampton ? I know you have added adventure this summer, but at the cost of no harwich departures to Scandinavia , will these be scrapped permanently ? As we were planning to do that trip next summer.

Hi Adam, have all the problems on the Monarch of the Seas been fixed? We sailed from Port Canaveral, March 9 – 13, 2012 and found it very disappointing. This was our fourth cruise, second with Royal Caribbean, and were rather shocked at all the problems, from very poor service on deck from the wait staff, to toilets and showers backing up and food definitely not at the same standard with Mariner of the Seas. There were good things about Monarch, but they were over-shadowed by all the problems.

  6. Tommy

I have been enjoying your cruises out of Baltimore, especially the longer 12 day cruises. Are there any plans to add more 12 day or longer cruises from Baltimore?

  7. Kim Virden

In regarding the question someone asked concerning “Is there any chance that passengers will be able to bring their pets with them one day onboard Royal Caribbean cruises?”.

Thank you so much for NOT allowing pets onboard. As a disabled passenger that has been onboard your wonderful cruise line twice may I add that “normal” pets can create quite a huge problem when they encounter service dogs any place in the United States. I’ve had many a dog growl and snap at my service animal. There’s a reason why these pets are not allowed at work, in restaurants and other public places – because many just aren’t friendly or have extra training on how to behave when they encounter other dogs.

The whole Service Dog industry and clients will commend your stance on this.

    Sincere thanks, Kim

    • Adam

We hope to see you onboard again soon, Kim.

    Good day Adam,

I know that if I go on a Celebrity ship, that I will be able to enjoy my Emerald Crown & Anchor perks but I won’t be able to accumulate that cruise on my membership. Is there any plan to change that and just make one loyalty membership for both company?

    Thanks,

Will RCL ever have adults only cruises?

I understand that The Explorer of the Seas will be undergoing a refurbishing/renovation/revitalization in 2103. Can you advise what ship will be replacing the Explorer operating out of Bayonne and when the aforementioned revitalization is scheduled?

    • Adam

Hi Donald, please keep an eye on our Royal Advantage page for information on upcoming enhancements. In addition, there are no plans to replace her during this time. Thank you.

    Mr. Goldstein,

While this is not for the blog, I hope it will find its way to someone who will act on this very simple issue. I have sent this same Email to a variety of places within RCCL with no response.

I have been a longtime fan of Royal Caribbean and will soon take my first cruise on Celebrity. All but 2 of my cruises have been with the RCCL family. I have always looked forward to the weekly specials as it has helped me plan my future vacations.

Unfortunately, almost a year ago I mistakenly clicked the “unsubscribe” button for the offers. This was a mistake and I have spent all this time trying to be reinstated with no success. I have experienced several weeks to receive a response to simple no response at all via Email and phone calls. I have tried the normal customer service lines as well as Crown and Anchor. I have even tried to sign up under different Email addresses. Nothing has worked and I am very frustrated.

I ask for your help in me being reinstated on the weekly promotion Email list as soon as possible.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Regards,
    Charles Bunnell

Hi, Me my wife and two daughters have been on the independence of the seas around the canaries, and are booked on allure of the seas this November around the caribean, after being on the independence we felt we needed to experience allure, but how are you going to top allure and oasis? Love royal caribean, on the independence we saw cleaning going on all the time the ship is immaculate inside and out, staff are brilliant and make you feel like VIP’s, we would only ever cruise with royal caribean, great job and thanks.

    • Adam

Luckily we’re up for the challenge, Neil. Thanks for your comments and we hope you and your family have a great time onboard this November. We’ll see you all soon.

  15. Gabrielle DeLuca

Why does Royal Caribbean not leave a ship year round departing out of Galveston?

  16. Tawana

Hello, I had the opportunity to cruise on the Allure and it was absolutely amazing! Please keep Chef Molly Brandt she is like the mad scientist of food! My experience at 150 Central Park was like none other. My questions are, 1. Are you considering a bowling alley for Allure that is the only thing that is missing; 2. Are you able to relax the penalty for single cruisers? I would cruise more if I didn’t have to pay double the price for a body that’s not even there! Maybe you could offer last minute deals for singles or something like that for when you see the ship is not sailing full. Help us help you… Thank you and I’m loyal to Royal

    Hi Adam,
I just want to bring to your attention that there is a glitch in the Wow Sale, and Royal Caribbean is losing clients because of it. In my situation, a travel agent held a cabin on the Oasis for August 2013 without my permission, only to discover the wow sale was 3 days afterwards. I was not aware I had a “reservation” (because in reality there was no money down and I was not given a reservation number) but yet I was penalized and could not receive the $100 ship board credit because I was “booked” prior to the sale. I emailed Royal Caribbean and Kimberly Howard responded, “Promotions are offered to generate revenue for our company and to attain business from those who have not booked with us before. Please understand that as a business we must generate new business to remain profitable, as we would not be able to provide such a fine product otherwise.” So it appears that Royal Caribbean has forgotten about their faithful past clients and only care about generating new business. I’m shocked and disappointed. We’ve sailed 5 times with Royal Caribbean and have booked 100′s of cruises, yes 100′s (in which I will glady send you everyone’s name) for friends and family. Because of this situation, we cancelled our previously made reservation that was for August 2012 on the Freedom of the Seas and booked the Disney Dream. We have a reservation for August 2013 on the Oasis, but if no one is willing to look into this matter, we will be cancelling it as well. I’m sorry to bother you with something that seems to be such a small matter, but to the consumer…it’s a big deal.
    Sincerely,
    Christy Duncan

Adam, we are Diamond members from Cocoa Beach, and dying to know which ship will be coming to replace the MONARCH for short trips to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral! We vote JEWEL!!! Our favorite new ship!

Also, does RCL have plans to cruise from Port Canaveral to Bermuda? Sounds like a good route to us!

    Hi Adam
I have been looking over different cruises…and different companys..and am having a hard time to pick…I want to do a small cruise leaving florida the beginning of march 2013…it is both my husband and mine birthdays and want to leave the beginning of March…Do you know when the specials start for that time…as that would be the only way we could go unless we won one……and thats probably not going to happen..lol…Just see specials all the time and when I put in the date of Mar 1 it is at full price…Just wondering if you knew…we have been told by people who take cruises all the time…that Royal C is the best…
    Thank You

Just returned from a cruise on Voyager of the Seas out of New Orleans. Staff was the most friendly we have ever experienced!!!!!!!! Sure would like to have more cruises out of New Orleans on any ship. Are there any plans for expanding the cruises out of that port?

GOOD AFTERNOON, ADAM I HOPE YOU CAN ANSWER MY QUESTION. I RECENTLY BOOKED MY SECOND CRUISE ON ROYAL CARIBBEAN JUNIOR SUITE 8562 FOR JAN 14 2013, CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THERE IS A PIECE OF 2 1/2 OR 3 INCH PIPE THAT RUNS FROM FLOOR TO CEILING. Just yesterday I talked to my travel agent direct line cruise , and told her to hold a cabin for me for a 2013 sailing .
The price was $909.00 balcony on adventure for 3/3/2013 .
Today I callback and she says it’s $1009.00 pp .
Long story short , money is very tight these days, and $200.00 is a big deal to us !!!!!
I am a platinum member and feel this is wrong !!!
She said to call Rccl ,but the young man who answered couldn’t care less of my problem, and just kept saying that’s the price, and he couldn’t help me .
I think you have to revamp your PR people, as they are like robots , and say things as if they are reading it offa cue card !!!
I really don’t expect you to read / or even answer this, but I just thought I’d let off some steam !!!
This will be our 18 th cruise in a row , and nine have been with RCCL!!!!!

    Hi Adam,
I was wondering if Royal Caribbean will ever come back to the West Coast. I saw that Princess has some pretty great West Coast Itineraries, without having to go any further south than Ensenada. Some of them go to Canada instead of Mexico which is awesome. I’m hoping RCCL will be coming back and doing those kinds of itineraries so I don’t have to go with Princess or Carnival because Royal Caribbean is my favorite cruiseline.

When will Tampa see a year round cruise ship? I mean i love that Jewel of the seas is there but i would love to go on during the summer.

  27. Brenda Rutherford

When are you going to change your smoking policy in balcony staterooms? If a stateroom is non-smoking then the balcony should be also. There is nothing worse than jumping out of bed first thing and running out to the balcony to have your next door neighbour blow smoke in your face. That is exactly what happened to us on our cruise in January past. I never went out on the balcony again, so getting the free upgrade was useless…..

We enjoy everything about curising and are currently booked on our first Mediterranean Cruise on Liberty of the Seas this fall. It would be great to know which nights are actually formal nights in advance. With the day long excursions we are planning we may not be up to a formal night and don’t want to waste space and time backing for a formal night if we won’t be able to attend. Can I find this information somewhere?
    Thank you,
    Charles

    Hi Adam,
Is there any news about Project Sunshine yet? Because I want to know all about the new innovations. Also, you should have a frozen yogurt shop on your ships because it is very popular.
    Thanks – Sarah

My wife an I have been diamonds for quite some time but have been unable to to move up to diamond plus because RCCL has abandoned the west coast. In order for us to take a Royal Caribbean cruise we have to spend thousands of dollars on top of the cost of the cruise. We can no longer afford to fly to the east coast, our last west coast cruise was on the Mariner of the Seas before it was repositioned to the east. We now have to take Carnival cruises which are below the standards of service and quality we expect and enjoy on Royal Caribbean. There is no need to go to Mexico when we have a beautiful west coast line and Canada to the north. Please come back to the west coast we miss you something terrible!! We want to make diamond plus!

  33. Diane CULLIGAN

We are Diamond members and have just found
Royal caribbean has a rule about transferring
Bookings to travel agent. We have 6 cabins I
Booked with C&A in feb, for July 20,2012. I wanted
To transfer them to vacations to go as they were
Offering an obc of $50. Per cabin. Rccl has
Refused our request because they said it had
To be transferred with 60 days of booking!
They will do NOTHING. Maybe Adam can help?
Someone should be able to help me!

    Hello Adam

I would like to know if the company will go forward and spread the “drink packages” policy found on celebrity ships to the Rc fleet..

We sailed with Celebrity last winter and enjoyed it a lot.. SO CONVINIENT…

Also do you think that the newer/larger ships in th Rc fleet will ever offer 10 to 12 days cruises?

We always book those longer cruises but the offer is very limited and now we almost did them all with Rc and would love to go on those new ships..

    Thanks

    Erick
