Q:  How do I know if my browser supports 128-bit encryption?
A:  To check what level of encryption your browser supports, follow the instructions below that are specific to your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and computer platform (PC or Mac).

If you find that your browser does not support 128-bit encryption, you will need to upgrade your browser in order to access secure pages on our site.

Netscape 6 and 7
PC and Mac
  1. With Netscape open, click on the Help menu and select About Navigator or About Communicator.
  2. Look at the bolded sentence at the bottom of the first section. If it says, "This version supports high-grade (128-bit) security with RSA Public Key cryptography" then you're all set. If it says anything lower than 128, you will need to upgrade your browser to a more recent version. Learn more about upgrading your browser.

Internet Explorer PC
  1. With Internet Explorer open, click on the Help menu and select "About Internet Explorer."
  2. Look in the section marked Cipher Strength.
  3. If it says 128-bit encryption, you're all set. If it says anything lower than 128, you will need to upgrade your browser to a more recent version. Learn more about upgrading your browser.

Mac
  1. With Internet Explorer open, click on the Apple icon and select "About Internet Explorer."
  2. In the gray box that appears, click on the Support button at the bottom.
  3. In the next box that appears, look for line that says Encryption. This is the level of encryption your browser supports. If it says 128-bit encryption, you're all set. If it says anything lower than 128, you will need to upgrade your browser to a more recent version in order to access secured pages on this site. Learn more about upgrading your browser.

Firefox 1.0
In Firefox, this option is not visible until connected to a site. Negotiation occurs between the client browser and the server at run-time. To view the encryption level being used while connected you can do the following:
  1. Click to the Tools menu
  2. Select Page Info
  3. Click the Security tab
Or: double-click the yellow lock icon in the lower right corner of the screen while connected to a secure site.
