Situated roughly in the northern center of Honshu, Toyama shares its border with Niigata and Nagano in the east, Gifu in the south, and Ishikawa in the west. Toyama City is located centrally and well known as the gateway to the Northern Japan Alps, home to the world-famous Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. To the north of the city lies Toyama Bay, one of the richest fishing areas in Japan. Local festivals, including the Ecchu-Owarakaze-no-bon and the Mugiya-matsuri Festival, are performed in each region within Toyama Prefecture.
