Borneo is most famous for its orangutan inhabitants, and you can see quite a few of them at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park located just half an hour from KK. The family-friendly park is also home to several other primates, tigers, elephants and other endemic wildlife you can only find in Malaysia.
Local bites in KK are a varied bunch. For the adventurous, sample some bak kut teh from a street stall. The soup, served with rice and fried dough, translates to "pork bone tea" and features pork ribs stewed with a variety of spices. Also notable in KK are the noodle dishes, including the soto nyonya, a savory noodle soup, and kuey teow, fried rice noodles. Your best bet to try a variety of authentic Malaysian cuisine is at a kedai kopi, buffet style restaurants found throughout KK.
For a more authentic shopping experience, lose yourself at the open-air Gaya Street Market. Artisans sell handmade bowls, plates and jewelry, and clothiers sell a variety of Malaysian fashions. If you'd rather escape the humidity, shop at Suriah Sabah mall in the heart of the city.
