The Recherche Archipelago consists of 105 islands and 1500 isles spread over 270km of coastline, making it the largest group of islands in all of southern Australia. The Archipelago is fast becoming recognized as one of Australia's aquatic wilderness areas, providing sheltered breeding grounds for sea lions, seals, penguins and the endangered black-footed rock wallaby. Southern right and humpback whales are often seen visiting the sheltered bays. The islands are also a haven for an enormous variety of outdoor recreation, including diving, snorkeling, fishing and sailing.
