As Vietnam's capital city for almost a thousand years, Hanoi has long been considered the country's cultural center. This charming, slow-paced hub is located on the right bank of the Red River and close to many of Vietnam's natural wonders, such as the spectacular Halong Bay. Hanoi's many museums, embassies and holy shrines to the late Ho Chi Minh reveal the rich history left behind by its storied dynasties. However, with new high-rises going up, and cars and motorbikes multiplying daily, it is also a city on the verge. Life in Hanoi is getting faster all the time.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
There's a reason why the world has placed Halong Bay on its must-visit list. Actually, there are endless reasons. Aside from the stunning 3,000 lush limestone islands, the bay also boasts a suite of natural wonders such as illuminated caves, emerald grottos and sandy beaches. And this UNESCO World Heritage Site's myth and mysteries are almost as big as its beauty. With a name like "bay where the dragon descended into the sea," how could you expect anything less?

Sporting Adventures
While many visitors consider crossing the bustling streets of Hanoi an adventure in itself, you'll find most of the action bright and early on the shores of scenic Hoan Kiem Lake. Try taking part in one of the fast-paced, competitive badminton games, if you dare. Or maybe you're looking for more tranquil exercise, like tai chi, practiced daily by Hanoi's young and old alike. Just watch and learn!

Get a Taste of Local Flavor
For a true taste of Hanoi, you must try the cha ca (grilled minced fish), a dish invented by Hanoi's own Doan family more than 100 years ago. Often made with fish varieties like sturgeon and tuna, cha ca is a dish you can tailor to your taste by throwing in your favorite condiments and herbs.

Local Currency
The Vietnamese currency is the dong. You can exchange currency in any of the following ways: at a bank, through an authorized exchange bureau or at a hotel reception desk. The best rates are at banks, but exchange bureaus are the most convenient option, as they're open longer hours. Most major credit cards should be accepted in almost any major city or popular tourist spot.
