St. Peter Port, Channel Islands

Perched on a hillside overlooking the harbor, St. Peter Port may look unassuming. But two of this century's most renowned artists have used it for creative inspiration. Victor Hugo wrote Les Misérables, and Renoir painted many of his masterpieces here.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

The harbor sits at sea level and the elevation rises as you go inland, creating striking cliffs along the coast. These are spectacular viewing spots for those who want to take in the landscape.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Explore La Valette Underground Military Museum, which is an old German Tunnel complex. This unique museum has a display of the island's military history, an aquarium and open-air bathing pools.
  • Visit the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery, located in Candie Gardens, where you can see the history of the island on film in one of its cinemas.
  • Spend the day at one of the many beaches on Guernsey. There are more than 20 bays to choose from and more water sports than you can imagine.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

The Channel Islands are known for their dairy products - especially their milk, which is touted to be the best in the world, and their locally grown produce, which thrives in the sunny climate. Two of the local favorites you may see are Guernsey Gâche, a fruit loaf and Gâche Mêlée, an apple cake.

Local Currency

The British pound sterling (GBP) is the official currency of the Channel Islands. Traveler's checks are widely accepted in banks, and credit cards can be used in most places. Aditionally, Guernsey has its own currency, but all United Kingdom notes and coins are considered legal tender and circulate without restriction. However, Guernsey's currency is not accepted in the U.K. , but can be reconverted in U.K. banks.
