The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
The beaches in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are absolutely spectacular. In Ixtapa, the main beach is Playa Palmar. This beautiful white-sand beach features water-sports facilities for adventurous travelers looking to get their blood pumping. In Zihuatanejo, Playa Municipal is a terrific beach from which to watch the local fisherman, merchants and people. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants and small shops to explore. Or catch a panga from Zihuatanejo's town pier over to Playa Las Gatas, a fantastic clear-water swimming and snorkeling beach lined with open-air seafood restaurants.
Other Fun Things to Do
Immerse yourself in the history and culture of this Mexican region at the Museo de Arqueología de la Costa Grande.
Saddle up. Explore the coastline on horseback at the Rancho Playa Linda.
Get a Taste of Local Flavor
In Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, you'll find a lot of fresh fish and seafood on the menu. Restaurants range from gourmet to small local establishments right on the beach. Of course you can also experience authentic traditional Mexican food, which you'll notice differs vastly from most of the Mexican food served in U.S. restaurants. In Mexico, tacos surpass the burger as the core fast food. Taquerías (taco stands) are plentiful. Check with the locals to see which ones they recommend.

Note: In Mexico you need to request your check. It is considered inappropriate for a waiter to present a guest with the bill if it has not been asked for.
Shopping for Bargains
Stroll through the Mercado de Artesanias, a craft market with fine goods from all over Mexico. Look for locally crafted Guerrero masks. These colorful wooden masks depict demons, devils, and animals, and were traditionally used in ceremonies and dances. Also keep your eye out for fine Taxco silver.
Local Currency
Mexico's currency is the peso (MXN). The $ sign is used to refer to pesos, so don't be shocked at the price tags. Any prices in U.S. dollars are listed as US$ or USD. Many hotels, restaurants and shops also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.
