The tropical paradise Suva lies on a beautiful peninsula on the Island of Viti Levu (pronounced Vee-tee Lay-vu), the largest island and the hub of the entire archipelago of Fiji. A city rich with color, life, and exuberant energy, Suva is Fiji's most concentrated confluence of ethnicities and cultures, mixing Indian, European, Chinese and South Pacific Islands. An excellent place to visit is the Fiji Museum on Ratu Cakobau Road. Full of exhibits and artifacts on display, this museum offers some wonderful insights into Fiji's rich and intriguing history, culture, people, languages and religions found here. The museum also takes a look at cannibalism in Fiji and the tribal conflicts and rivalry that often resulted in bloody feuds. There is a large striking drua on display here as well. A drua is a traditionally built catamaran. On the second floor of the museum is a, art gallery featuring local Indo-Fijian artists.
Food in Fiji is just as diverse as the residences that call Fiji home. Though Fijian curry is the Island's delight, you'll still find the city dotted with restaurants that offer many different cuisines and dining experiences. For a taste of Fijian cuisine that will excited your taste buds, try meals that include kakoda, rourou, duruka, lovo, kassaua and breadfruit.
Head to the Municipal Handicraft Centre and peruse rows filled with Fijian wooden carvings, straw goods and Fijian handicraft souvenirs. Don't be afraid to test out your negotiating skills with the shop owners to haggle a better price.
The Fijian dollar (FJD) is the official currency of Fiji. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.
