The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

An excellent place to visit is the Fiji Museum on Ratu Cakobau Road. Full of exhibits and artifacts on display, this museum offers some wonderful insights into Fiji's rich and intriguing history, culture, people, languages and religions found here. The museum also takes a look at cannibalism in Fiji and the tribal conflicts and rivalry that often resulted in bloody feuds. There is a large striking drua on display here as well. A drua is a traditionally built catamaran. On the second floor of the museum is a, art gallery featuring local Indo-Fijian artists.

Other Fun Things to Do

• Journey outside city limits to the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, home to many of Fiji's rare and endangered plant and animal species. The sub-tropical rainforest features a number of tracks, which lead to a series of waterfalls.
• The city has a number of parks and a few gardens that are worth a look. Albert Park, in the city center has set the stage for many national-historical events and Thurston Gardens is the city’s main botanical garden.

Food in Fiji is just as diverse as the residences that call Fiji home. Though Fijian curry is the Island's delight, you'll still find the city dotted with restaurants that offer many different cuisines and dining experiences. For a taste of Fijian cuisine that will excited your taste buds, try meals that include kakoda, rourou, duruka, lovo, kassaua and breadfruit.

Shopping for Bargains

Head to the Municipal Handicraft Centre and peruse rows filled with Fijian wooden carvings, straw goods and Fijian handicraft souvenirs. Don't be afraid to test out your negotiating skills with the shop owners to haggle a better price.

Local Currency

The Fijian dollar (FJD) is the official currency of Fiji. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.
