Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Freshly caught seafood, including mussels and whitebait, are the staples of the coastal cuisine in Burgas. Bulgaria’s warm climate makes it ideal for growing a variety of vegetables, resulting in hearty salads (some served with savory chunks of sausage), and pickled vegetable dishes and garnishes. Have lunch at a mehana, meaning “wine house,” where small appetizer-style dishes called mezes are served before the main course. Don’t leave Burgas without sampling rakia, a sweet brandy made from plums, grapes, peaches or cherries that is traditionally served with vegetables.

Shopping for Bargains

Stay in Burgas’s city center for the best shopping bargains in Bulgaria. For a more urban shopping experience, head to the modern Galleria Burgas, the first Bulgarian shopping center to be given LEED certification for its eco-friendly construction.

Local Currency

The Lev (BGN) is the official currency of Bulgaria, but most cash transactions can also be done in Euros. Currency can be exchanged at most banks and exchange offices. Credit cards are not recommended for payment as their use is not as widespread in Bulgaria as in other parts of Europe.
