In July 1941, during the 900-day siege, the entire Hermitage Museum staff — from curators to cleaners —mobilized to pack and evacuate more than 1 million artworks with the help of hundreds of citizen volunteers.
During World War II, the Nazis looted the great palaces outside the city, including the magnificent Amber Room in the Catherine Palace. Russian craftsmen worked for decades to create the replica that is on display. To this day, the whereabouts of the original contents are unknown.
