Explore the beauty of Alaska by water and by land, with a personal introduction to its wildlife at a refuge established by Steve Kroschel, the well-known animal tamer, naturalist and independent filmmaker. Board a ferry near the pier for a 45-minute ride, passing through some of the most awe-inspiring scenery on the planet. Then transfer to a bus and travel past breathtaking, rugged landscapes, arriving at the Kroschel Wildlife Center. Walk along groomed trails frequented by the likes of reindeer, grizzlies, wolverines and foxes, porcupines, and moose — more than 15 species of hardy Alaskan wildlife. Many of the animals that thrive here were donated by the State of Alaska through a permitting process for orphaned or abandoned wildlife, allowing them to live in natural but protected habitats. Known by locals as “Dr. Doolittle” for his dedication to the animals, Steve is also an accomplished filmmaker. He has contributed to films like Disney’s Never Cry Wolf and makes humanitarian films that often star the animals at his refuge. Steve’s footage of avalanches appears regularly in Hollywood films, such as the movie Everest. Enjoy nearly two hours at the refuge before retracing the enchanting route to Skagway via bus and ferry.

• Skagway to Haines: Board a ferry near the pier and admire majestic Alaskan scenery from the water, then transfer to a bus to enjoy overland views of the rugged wilderness.
• Kroschel Wildlife Center: Visit a shelter for rescued Alaskan wildlife and walk along trails to see and interact with the animals. Kiss a moose, plus see bears, wolverines, lynxes, foxes and more.
• Steve Kroschel: Affectionately called “Alaska’s Dr. Doolittle” Steve is a well-known naturalist and respected documentary filmmaker.
