Travel by coach to Baixa to begin walk to center of Lisbon. Walk will take you from Praca da Figueira to Elevador da Gloria or Santa Justa Lift. Travel by coach to Baixa with its main squares Praca da Figueira and Rossio to begin your journey to the center of life in Lisbon. Its present appearance is due to the Marques de Pombal with its 18th and 19th century buildings lined along three sides, their ground floors occupied by souvenir shops and cafes.
Your walk will take you from Praça da Figueira to the Elevador da Gloria. This funicular is a connection between the Praça dos Restauradores and the Bairro Alto or High Quarter. The ride spans 265 meters and takes approximately five minutes, taking you to the São Pedro de Alcantara Belvedere, with stunning views over the city, giving you an idea of the feeling Lisbon conveys, with views over the tiled rooftops of the city. Afterwards, you will enjoy a glass of Port wine at solar do Vinho do Porto (interior vist) located next door to the Belveder.
A short walk will take you to the magnificent Sao Roque Church. As you visit the interior, you will marvel at the beautiful painted wood ceiling, and the renowned chapel by Luigi Vanvitelli honoring John the Baptist. The church, founded by the Jesuits in the late 16th century, was ordered by King Joao V in 1741, assembled in Rome from precious materials, such as Alabaster and Lapis Lazuli, dismantled, shipped to Lisbon and reassembled.
Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 1.5 miles over asphalt and cobblestone surfaces, inclines and 20+ steps. Low heeled, comfortable walking shoes and comfortable, loose clothing are recommended. This tour will operate in all weather conditions so participants should take appropriate weather gear with them. Should the Gloria Lift be closed during your visit, you will take the Santa Justa Lift as an alternative. This tour can not be operated on Mondays Morning when the S. Roque Church is closed. Sundays the Port Wine Institute is closed. Port wine will be served at Cervejaria Trindade.
