Gotland is an island of contrasts. Visby is the capital. A medieval town with a 3500 meter wall that encircles the old houses.
The tour starts at the "old habour", Almedalen in Visby. Then the tour continues on the countryside with stops at an old medieval church, driving to the south center of Gotland to Lojsta, see the Gannarve stone-setting burial place from the Irion Age. Then a drive along the coastline viewing the sea, landscape and then a stop for coffee with sandwich at Stelor in Västergarn. Continue driving north towards Visby with a stop at Högklint. And finally back to the pier.
Gotland is an island of contrasts. A tour of the island shows the changes in nature and architectures. Renowned for its inviting sandy beaches, savannah-like landscapes, and juniper-clad, big limestone formations (stacks) along some of the coast and spectacular sunrises. Gotland also has many fine examples of medieval churches that still are in use.
The capital of the island is Visby. It’s a medieval town with a stone-wall built in the late 13th century. The wall is almost 3500 meters long and encircles the old houses, churches and cobblestoned street-system. Board your coach; witch first will take you to the “old harbor”, Almedalen. Today it’s a park with a pond, for you to enjoy the greenery and the view of the medieval town of Visby.
Then the coach will drive you through the agriculture district east and south of Visby. Stops for a visit at one of the many medieval countryside churches. Next the coach will take you to the small village Lojsta. In Lojsta you may see some ruins of an old defending castle (from 13th century) – Lojsta Slott - “hide” in the greenery and walk 150 m north east you can also enter a house – Lojsta Hallen - which is a reconstruction of an iron age (500 BC) building . The tour will then take you further to the west coast. Driving to Frojel and the imposing burial place – Gannarve Skeppsattning -, a stone-setting from the Bronze Age ( 1100 – 500 BC). The grave consists of stones standing on their edge in the form of a ship. It was believed that the metaphor ship was to carry the departed chieftains on their voyage to eternity. The surrounding view along the coast is magnificent and you can also watch the 2 - Karls Islands – 2 small islands where the birdlife are very rich and rare. The coach will continue driving north along the coast and stops at Stelor Hotel & Restaurant – a newly restored farm from the 18th century - for a break with coffee/tea and a sandwich.
Before the coach takes you back to Visby port, the coach will stop at the massive limestone cliffs at Hogklint . From Hogklint you will be admiring the stunning view over the coastline of Gotland and Visby at the north. So don´t forget to take a picture of your cruise-ship!
