You will experience first-hand the coffee roasting process at the Espiritu Santo Cooperative farm where you will have the chance to sample the flavorful brew. Then visit the artisan homeland of Sarchí, after a delicious complete lunch, you can purchase hand-painted souvenirs such as unique oxcarts with typical Costa Rican designs. Drive back to the pier through coffee and sugar cane plantations along scenic roads, where you can take the best pictures of our countryside. Be part of the culture in one day.
Coffee cultivation has been the primary source of income for many Costa Rican families since the turn of the nineteenth century. In many ways it modified and consolidated the democratic government in 1950. This tour allows you to get a glimpse inside one of the most important aspects that defines Costa Rica as the strongest nation in all of Central America.
You will visit a 670 acre cooperative farm owned by more than 2300 farmers,which approximately 60% are women. Each member contributes almost 10 acres of land to the coop. The coffee that they cultivate and produce is sold directly to one of the largest coffee companies in the world, Starbucks. This coffee is also purchased by Rainforest Alliance, an organization that focuses on the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. You will experience first-hand how the coffee beans are picked, sorted, peeled, fermented, and sun-dried, roasted and have the chance to sample the flavorful brewing. There will be free time for shopping.
Following your tour of the coffee plantation, you will board transportation for a drive to Sarchi where lunch will be served at a local restaurant before returning to Puntarenas and the ship.
