Learn about modern sled dog racing and gold rush history. Come to the Klondike Gold Fields and meet an Iditarod musher who will give a video presentation that introduces dogs of the Klondike Gold Rush and highlights winter dog sledding of today. On your way to meet his Iditarod dog team, you will stop at the checkpoint tent with your musher. He will introduce all the gear a musher and his dog team takes on long-distance races, like the Iditarod. The sled dogs and puppies are eagerly waiting to meet you. Meet the team and watch as the musher hooks them up to a sled for a demonstration run. They will demonstrate their discipline and enthusiasm with a fast run around the track. After, you are invited to interact with the dogs and hold the puppies. Next, experience the cold of a Klondike winter with a 40 Below Experience. Suit up in warm layers and enter the cold chamber where you will see and feel the effects of extreme cold while seated on an ice throne.
Take a guided tour of an authentic 350-ton Klondike Gold Dredge. Historic photographs and videos help bring the dredge to life so you can experience the impact it had on the people and the land. A film will detail the reconstruction of the dredge piece by piece after it was moved from the Klondike. There will be time to shop the selection of fine jewelry, gold nuggets, and Alaskan gifts. Stay past your tour departure and we will provide complimentary transportation on the city bus back to your ship.
