Enjoy this fully narrated tour detailing the operations of an active salmon hatchery and the awesome beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier.  Your tour begins with the colorful history of Juneau’s gold rush era as your driver/guide introduces you to downtown Juneau en route to the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery.  Upon arriving at the hatchery you will be met by a knowledgeable guide who will share with you the dynamic role of the hatchery in salmon production.  Inside the hatchery, you will have ample opportunity to explore the touch tanks and aquariums filled with local marine species and museum quality displays detailing the hatchery’s annual production of over 150 million salmon.  You may see adult spawning salmon from July to September or possibly have the chance to feed immature salmon fry from May to early June.
After a quick transfer via motorcoach, you will be able to view one of Mother Nature’s most amazing treasures….the Mendenhall Glacier.  The glacier is 1.5 miles wide, hundreds of feet thick and is fed by the 1,500 square mile Juneau Icefield.  This meandering river of compressed ice ranks as the largest, most rugged glacier accessible by road.  The U.S. Forest Service staff is available throughout the visitor center complex to answer your questions on glaciers and the center is a great vantage point for breathtaking photographs of this world-famous glacier.
