Full Description:
Today`s Split is the product of 17 centuries of building, renovating and remodelling, meshing the Split of yesterday with the Split of today. At the core of this sprawling cityscape is the spectacular Roman palace erected by Roman Emperor Diocletian, for his golden years at the turn of the 4th century. What began as a fortified camp and imperial residence became a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, inhabited by pre-Romanesque churches alongside Gothic chapels, history-filled museums next to galleries of contemporary art while aromatic restaurants compete with bustling cafes for the attention of passers-by.
Follow your guide on a walking tour of the Cathedral of St. Duje, the patron saint of the city. The cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient shrine and claims to be the oldest in the world. Next, visit the charming Temple of Jupiter before proceeding to the Split City Museum. Occupying a set of medieval buildings within the Diocletian Palace's northeast quadrant, the museum is housed in the early 16th century Gothic-Renaissance Papalic Palace, formerly inhabited by one of Split's most prominent families. The Papalic Palace occupies the eastern, bigger segment of the set, within which exhibition halls are curated among two courtyards. The inner walls of the set are within the Roman era Diocletian's Palace. Its well-preserved pavement, the Carda porch, canals, pavement plate prints, and the remains of white mosaic are sure to make a memorable impression. Following your museum tour, continue past the Golden & Silver Gates and the Peristyle Square, among other well-preserved relics.
At the conclusion of your city tour, join your coach for a short drive to the Ostarija Tavern. Situated in an approximately 100-year old house with its original barrels, the tavern is near the well-known "Bacvice" Beach. With imagination, patience and love, the owners have converted a devastated cellar into a unique, charming tavern. Thick stone walls maintain the natural temperature and provide a unique atmosphere. True wine connoisseurs will appreciate the handmade glasses adorning every table. Enjoy locally produced smoked ham, cheese, olives and great selection of Dalmatian wines. Your tour concludes with a return to the pier by coach.
