Full Description:
A visit to St. Petersburg is always a rewarding and unforgettable experience. By European standards, it is a young city. In May 2003, St. Petersburg celebrated the 300th anniversary of its foundation. St. Petersburg lies on the banks of the Neva River and the numerous islands of its delta. The city’s rich architecture and history comes alive as your coach travels along the bustling avenues and embankments of the city.

Begin your journey with a comfortable coach ride from the ship into St. Petersburg. Take your first photos at St. Isaac’s Square. The square is dominated by the majestic Saint Isaac’s Cathedral which was built from 1818 – 1858 and with its gilded dome is ranked 4th largest in the world. View the monument to Nicholas the First in the center of the square. Pass the Palace Square, the main square of the city, beautifully balanced and proportioned around the Alexander Column, an important focal point for this architectural ensemble. On the square’s northern side stands the picturesque Baroque Winter Palace, a former imperial residence.

Your ride continues across the Neva River to the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, flanked by two Rostral Columns which were originally lighthouses for guiding ships through the busy port of St. Petersburg. Take a moment to enjoy the panoramic view of the Neva River at its widest point. Peter and Paul Fortress, the first structure of the city stands straight ahead. Central to the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, designed by Domenico Tresini. This magnificent church was built between 1713-1732 and it is still the highest point dominating the city’s skyline.

Continue your tour with a drive past the Artillery Museum along the Petrograd side of the city where Art Nouveau architecture flourished at the end of the 19th century. Proceed to the Aurora cruiser, which signaled the start of the revolution in 1917 by firing a single blank shot from its bow gun.

Following the view of this historical battleship, the coach proceeds to one of St. Petersburg’s most legendary landmarks, the Church of Resurrection on the Spilled Blood. This marvelous old Russian-style church was constructed on the fateful site where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated on March 1, 1881. Built from 1883-1907, the church is designed in the spirit of the 16th and 17th century Russian architecture. The best Russian painters and masters of stone carving, ceramic and enamel took part in the decoration of the church.

Your tour concludes with a ride through St. Petersburg’s and Russia’s most famous street, Nevsky Prospect. Lined with magnificent palaces, churches and theatrical buildings, the street is the primary shopping district of St. Petersburg and some of the finest shops can be found around Gostiny Dvor Arcade and Passage. At the conclusion of your city tour, return to the ship by coach.
