Travel from the port and along Marine Parade to the Art Deco Visitor's Centre. Here, your local guide will join you for the drive through the heart of Napier, the most complete Art Deco city in the world. The original city was levelled by a dramatic and devastating earthquake in 1931; the city was rebuilt to the contemporary style of the times.

Stop at the Municipal Theatre, an outstanding example of New Zealand Art Deco. Dating back to 1938, the theatre was designed by J.T. Watson, the Borough Architect for Napier in the 1930's.

Enjoy a slow drive through Ahuriri, the site of Napier's earliest settlement and the unique suburb of Marewa, which in Maori language means 'Gift from the Sea'. In this area you will find house and garden-styles of the 1930's and 1940's, built on swampland raised by the 1931 earthquake.

Next, drive through the coastal countryside to the village of Havelock North and on to the fertile Haretaunga Plains, abundant with orchards and market gardens.

Climb through this magnificent countryside to the lookout point of Te Mata Peak. Stop to take photographs and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and the green hills. The peak itself was formed by a massive slab of the Earth's crust slowly tilting upward at an angle. You will also learn of the Maori Legend and love story as to how the mountain was formed.

Return to Napier and visit the National Tobacco Company building, designed by Louis Hay, New Zealand's master Art Deco architect. The building is richly decorated with wooden panels of grapes, roses and bull rushes, reflecting elements of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Chicago School. As you walk through the reception area, your guide will point out the wonderful oak panelling and stained glass that surrounds you. At the conclusion of your tour you will return to the ship.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately .5 miles over flat surfaces with some steps. Order of itinerary may vary to avoid congestion.
