Venture to the medieval Provencal village of Le Castellet to explore its rich military heritage, cultural traditions and culinary delights on a four-hour tour that includes a tasting of local dishes, plus plenty of free time. A feudal commune perched high atop ragged cliffs, Le Castellet exudes all the glories of Provencal charm: picture small town squares and well-preserved houses adorned in stonework entwined in wisteria and bougainvillea. You’ll first explore as you wish, perhaps taking in spectacular countryside panoramas from Le Trou Madame, also known as “The Lady’s Balcony”. The town’s 17th-century castle was once converted into stables and an oil mill and now houses Town Hall. Built in 1030, Church of the Savior of the Transfiguration flaunts a Romanesque façade topped by a bell tower. Le Castellet is also a great spot to score handmade pottery, candles, jewelry, or leather goods. Then settle into a local restaurant that overlooks Provence’s rural landscapes to delight in a tasting of regional snacks and wine — this region of France is known best for its rose wines, olive oil, tapenade and cheese. Once you’ve fully experienced the sights and flavors of this hilltop hamlet, you’ll return by coach to your ship.
