While conducting routine weekly COVID-19 testing on board Royal Caribbean International’s Spectrum of the Seas, in preparation for sailing on Oct 21, a fully vaccinated crew member (who previously recovered from COVID-19 in July 2021), had an indeterminant PCR test result. The test sample was immediately delivered to the Department of Health to be retested, and officials reported that the result was preliminary positive. The same crew member was retested once again by The North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre (HKICC) and the result was negative.
In addition to this initial crew member, all 1,250-crew on board Spectrum of the Seas have since been re-tested twice, with all results coming back negative.
Notwithstanding this evidence, the Department of Health continues to acknowledge the preliminary positive test result and has required a suspension of operations for a minimum of 21 days.
Royal Caribbean continues to comply with local epidemic prevention policies and regulations, alongside our own protocols. As part of this, we worked with local authorities in regards to emergency response measures. The health and safety of guests and crew is our top priority.
To sail aboard Spectrum, all crew and guests age 12 and older must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide negative test results beforehand. Children ineligible for the vaccine must test negative as well.
