The centuries have left a lasting impression on Tianjin, and it's waiting to be discovered. In this portside metropolitan area, you can climb a 1,400-year-old section of the Great Wall or wander through Jinmen Guli, the ancient cultural street, where you'll find shops selling traditional jade handicrafts and architecture dating back to the 1600s. Soak up the history at the Tianjin Museum, home to ancient cultural artifacts. Then, head to the Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park, which sits atop a former Soviet Russian aircraft carrier. Cruise to Beijing and take the 1.5-hour trip to nearby Beijing, where you can shop in 700-year-old Nan Luogu Xiang alley or the city's massive silk market.

A beautiful and bustling city, Nagasaki's streets have been touched by foreign culture for generations. This is the port by which the Portuguese and Dutch brought Japan into contact with Western culture in the 1500s, and over the years, international influence has continued to transform Nagasaki into the hub of cosmopolitan activity it is today. Explore the Dutch Slope, where you'll find Dutch residences from the 1800s and Japan's first Protestant Church, Higashi Yamate. Cruise to Nagasaki to see the oldest bridge in Japan, Megane-bashi — or "Spectacles Bridge," so called for its arched appearance. Then, visit Nagasaki Peace Park, with its 18-meter-wide fountain built to memorialize the events that took place here when the atomic bomb struck in 1945.

Play James Bond

Just 20 kilometers from the shore of Nagasaki lies a mysterious, abandoned island. Commonly called Gunkanjima or Battleship Island, its derelict shores tell a story of coal mines and immigrants. On a guided tour, you can see the areas that famously appeared in the James Bond movie "Skyfall".

Mt. Inasa is the tallest mountain in Nagasaki and gives you a dazzling view over the city and the bay. At 333 meters high, you can see as far as the Goto Islands on a clear day. To get to the observation deck, hop on the ropeway up the mountainside.

Dine like royalty at a Shippoku Ryori restaurant. You'll be served shareable small plates that blend Japanese staples with influences from China and Europe. Sample kakuni, cubes of pork belly braised in a dashi broth flavored with umami-packed dried bonito fish. Steeped in historical beauty, Kitakyushu is an age-old gateway to the rest of Japan's Kyushu island. Formed in 1963 from the merger of five cities, you'll find Kitakyushu is both a sprawling metropolis and a picturesque portside city. Cruise to Kitakyushu and explore its industrial history in the eclectic old Mojiko Port, where the whimsical facades of century-old buildings are interwoven with the backdrop of the modern buildings. Get familiar with the island's cultural depth at Kokura Castle — see the classic Edo Period architecture with its sweeping white eaves, and stroll through the cherry blossoms that dot the castle grounds. Or stretch your legs in Kawachi Wisteria Garden, where you can walk through dreamy purple tunnels of carefully cultivated wisteria flowers.

Purple Tunnels

In the mountainside Kitakyushu lies a private garden of purple flowers called Kawachi Wisteria Garden. Wander through seemingly endless tunnels of cultivated wisteria that shroud you in shades of purple. The most popular viewing season is late April to early May, but the gardens are also open for the fiery colors of autumn.

If you're going to the wisteria gardens, it's best to go with a tour and book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Get Retro

In days of old, Mojiko port was a hub of commercial activity. When the port moved, buildings with historical significance were renovated and preserved in what today is called Mojiko Retro. Visit the striking red-brick Moji Customs Building, take a tour of the Kyushu Railway History Museum, or enjoy the view at the Mojiko Retro Observation Room.

Castle Calm

First built in 1602, Kokura Castle is famous for its Chinese-style tower and hand-built natural stone walls. The castle was rebuilt in 1959 and today houses a small museum, where you can see gold-leaf tiger paintings and or sit in a palanquin sedan chair that once belonged to Japanese royalty. Then, do some hanami (flower-viewing) in the gardens and visit the Shinto Kokura Yasaka shrine.

Local Cuisine

Japanese chefs are some of the world's best when it comes to preparing seafood, and Kitakyushu is an ideal place to experience their skill. Pufferfish caught in the treacherous nearby seas of Kanmon Strait is said to be the best in all Japan — enjoy as sashimi or boiled in a hearty hot-pot at a fugu restaurant. Jump onboard a Kitakyushu cruise and try the favorite local snack karashi mentaiko, salty, spicy cod roe expertly pickled.

The best places to pick up souvenirs are in Mojiko Retro. If you are looking for a one-stop shop, head to Mojiko Retro Tourist Center. You'll find everything from sweets to signature crafts like Japanese wooden dolls. Mojiko Kaikyo Plaza has a collection of shops selling traditional music boxes and other trinkets.
