Sapporo is located in western Hokkaido and is the largest city on the island. In the heart of the city, Odori Avenue Park stretches from east to west and is filled with art objects, fountains, lilac and acacia plants and lots of flowerbeds. Trading companies, financial institutions and local government offices populate the northern area and a large underground shopping mall dominates the southern area. The city contains many essential sights including the Sapporo City Clock, which has been marking time for over a century and the old Hokkaido government building, a neo-baroque building known as "Red Brick" that is lit up after dark.
