Stresa, Italy

The small town of Stresa, which dates back to 998, is set on the shores of the crystal-clear Lago Maggiore. Graced with grand hotels, villas, parks and gardens, from the promenade you can have a magnificent view of the three islands, and of the Alps far away. One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Piazza Marconi: With its landing-stage and the Church of Saint Ambrogio that was restored in the Neo-Classical style by G. Zanoia in 1790, it makes for beautiful seaside strolling. Narrow paths around the palazzo lead to the inner courtyards, and to the Giardino d'Amore, famous for being the setting of romantic encounters between Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte in 1797. The gardens themselves are interesting, with numerous botanical species, from jasmine to orange and pomegranate, as well as orchids, rhododendron, azaleas and camellias.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Northern Italian cuisine is characterized by less use of olive oil, pasta and tomato sauce and more use of butter, rice, corn (for polenta) and cheeses for cream sauces. Northern Italians are proud of their unspoiled countryside, and main courses often include some sort of game or wild fowl such as rabbit, quail or grouse. Seafood and shellfish are very popular on the coasts and rivers and streams provide carp and trout. If it grows well in the area, it will usually end up in the kitchen.

Local Currency

The Euro (EUR), the currency of the European Union, is the official currency of Italy. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.
