The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Set out to explore Mount Rinjani, the towering 12,000-foot volcano that keeps a watchful eye over Lombok. You can either spend time in the town of Tetebatu at the foothills of the mighty mountain or, if time permits, take a challenging two-day trek to experience the spectacular views from the summit.

A sea kayaking expedition is another unique way to explore the pristine coastline and experience a glorious sunset, as a blood-red sun sinks into the horizon.

Shopping for Bargains

What can you expect to find while souvenir shopping on Lombok? A variety of fabric and textiles such as sarongs, wall hangings and table cloths are available for purchase. These items are woven in the traditional style of Ikat, which means to tie or bind. You will also find pottery and figurines, painstakingly created to showcase intricate details. Penujak, Banyumulek and Masbagik are known for their pottery offerings.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

On Lombok you won?t find many dishes with pork due to the area's Muslim population. You will, however, find plenty of meat, like goat and chicken combined with vegetables and spices that produce a mouthwatering Indonesian dining experience. Treat yourself with some sarobi, a dish of rice flour, palm sugar, coconut milk, chili and tapioca all rolled into a banana leaf. Finish with a bowl of es campur, shaved ice with a variety of seasonal fruits and jellied candies topped with boiled palm sugar.

Local Currency

The rupiah (Rp) is the official currency of Indonesia. The U.S. dollar is the most widely accepted foreign currency, however, and American Express is the most widely accepted traveler's check. Use of credit cards may be limited in remote places. Be sure to carry a mix of currency during your travels.
