La Palma, Canary Islands

Made up of volcanic rock and lush green vegetation, there's no wonder why the island of La Palma is also known as "The Pretty Isle." It's one of seven islands in the Canary Islands archipelago off the coast of Africa and is dominated by natural beauty, from bright blue skies to black-sand beaches.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

The island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, is on the east side of the island and is the center of all the action on this otherwise quiet and peaceful island. In town you'll find a maritime museum, the Museum of Natural History, plenty of shops and restaurants as well as interesting architecture. In fact, Santa Cruz is known for its balconies, which range in size, color and material, from canary pine wood to antique iron.

Other Fun Things to Do

Head to the countryside and to Los Llanos de Aridane, one of the commercial centres of La Palma. From the observation platform, El Time, you can see the neighboring Canary Islands, La Caldera de Taburiente and Tijarafe.
Spend time in Tazacorte, a small fishing harbor with black pebble and sand beaches, surrounded by banana trees.
Walk the black-sand beach in Puerto de Naos, a small village on the west coast of the island. The main boulevard offers bars, restaurants and some tourist shops.
For a different feel all together, visit Fuencaliente, a village on the south side of the island where you'll find pine forests, vineyards and volcano peaks among the scenic landscape.

Shopping for Bargains

The Canary Islands offer great shopping opportunities, often with better prices than those offered at tax- and duty-free shops elsewhere. In addition to vacation souvenirs, shops offer electronics, jewelry, liqueurs and even some rare finds, like Chinese silk. You'll also find handmade crafts, like baskets made of wicker, reed or palms, delicate embroidery and pottery.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Local restaurants serve a variety of cuisine, but main dishes, typically, are grilled meat or fresh fish and often served with a spicy sauce, called mojo. Locally grown fruits, like bananas, avocado and pears are readily found on the menu in sauces and as side dishes. For dessert, be sure to try an almond or honey creation.

Local Currency

As part of the European Union, the Canary Island's official currency is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards and traveler's checks are also widely accepted.
