The Cathedral Church (Iglesia de los Jesuitas) was built in 1856, making it the oldest building in Puerto Montt. Constructed entirely of larch wood, its design, reminiscent of the Parthenon of Athens, Greece, sets it uniquely apart from Chile's more traditional cathedrals. Incorporated into one of the cathedral's pillars is the original foundation stone of Puerto Montt, adding to its special historical value.
Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, Puerto Montt offers anglers world-class fly-fishing for brown and rainbow trout in the crystal clear, glacier fed rivers that wind through the Andean valleys. The spectacular surroundings also make it an ideal destination for hikers, birdwatchers and sightseers.
Fish is to Chile as beef is to Argentina. If you love seafood, a visit to the nearby Angelmo fish market is a must. You'll find a variety of fresh fish and shellfish, including salmon, sea bass, mussels, clams, lake trout, and more. Curanto - a mix of shellfish, sausage, chicken and beef on a gooey pancake - is a local favorite.
Down around the city's port is a delightful little craft market where you can pick up hand-crafted wool sweaters for about $10 dollars US. You'll also find some very good deals on semi-precious stones - particularly Lapis Lazuli, a beautiful blue stone with hints of violet and green.
Puerto Montt's currency is the Chilean Peso (CH$). Most major credit cards are accepted in the city's main hotels and business establishments. However, in smaller stores or stores outside the city most transactions require local currency. Travelers checks are a good option because they can easily be changed into either U.S. dollars or Chilean pesos Puerto Montt's banks.
