The One Thing You Don't Want To Miss

Just on the outskirts of Sevastopol are the amazing Greek ruins of Khersones, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was founded close to 2,500 years ago. The ruins are locally known as the “Ukrainian Pompeii,” and have survived the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War and bombings by the Nazis during World War II.

Other Fun Things To Do

  • The Panorama Museum showcases in 3-D how Sevastopol defended itself during the 349-day siege that took place in the Crimean War.
  • Visit the Sevastopol Aquarium, the oldest in Ukraine, and see a collection of underwater species native to the Black Sea, as well the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
  • One of the most iconic sights in Sevastopol is the Count’s Landing Stage, a granite landmark sitting on the shores of the city that represent its symbolic entrance.

Get A Taste Of Local Flavor

One of the heartiest dishes to try is borsch, an iconic stew made with beets, dill, potatoes and other seasonal vegetables. Try it with garlic buns called pampoushki and sour cream. Another unique dish you’ll only find in Ukraine is the golubtsi, which are cabbage leaves filled with meat and rice with a mushroom and cheese topping. Deruny are another Ukrainian favorite, but you’ll recognize them as savory potato pancakes.

Shopping For Bargains

Original art, from paintings to artisanal crafts, is on display during the weekends just outside of Sevastopol’s city hall. Look for open air markets throughout the city to find additional souvenirs and Ukrainian goods.

Local Currency

The local currency in Sevastopol is the Ukranian hryvnia (UAH). Exchange money at any banks in Sevastopol, preferably at the city center, and make sure the cash you exchange is in fairly good condition.
