Founded in 1641, Kristiansand is the capital of Southern Norway and a modern trade, cultural and communications center. Norway?s fifth largest city, Kristiansand is situated on the south coast of Norway, facing the European continent and surrounded by water on three sides. Its surrounding villages are Birkeland, Iveland, Lillesand, Songdalen, Søgne og Vennesla. The Kristiansand area is known for its busy summer harbors, white wooden houses, a rocky coast with skerries and the Quart Music Festival.

Explore the area around the fishmarket and quayside or visit an outdoor café in the pedestrian area. Norwegian delicacies such as smoked salmon, newly caught mackerel, fish cakes or filet of moose are offered at the counters of the indoor fish market. If you?re looking for a unique experience, do like the locals: buy a bag of fresh shrimp or a basket of locally grown strawberries and enjoy them sitting at the quayside.
Shop for local products at the Posebyen Market, or browse the shops that line the pavements and streets at Kvadraturen, a lively bustling part of the city center. If you?re looking for the current trends, head to Kristiansand?s main street, Markens, for one of the city?s largest shopping center ? Slotts Quartalet. For a casual shopping experience, check out Skippergada, a side street with smaller boutiques, charming coffee-shops and cafes serving home-made bread pastries.
The Norwegian Krone (NOK) is the official currency of Norway. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.
