Nouméa, the charming capital of New Caledonia, has quite a few things to brag about. It's the third largest island in the South Pacific. It's home to the world's largest lagoon and second largest coral reef. And if that's not enough, it's part French. The cuisine is fabulous. The shopping, well, can you say haute couture? And you're never very far from a full-bodied glass of French wine. And yes, you also get to visit places like Pierre Vernier Walk, Baie des Citrons, and Place des Cocotiers. Which are almost as much fun to say as they are to see.
Find Cruises Sailing to This PortBoard a luxury, high-speed ferry for a 45-minute ride to Amedee Lighthouse Island where paradise awaits. Upon arrival, you can relax on the beautiful white sand beach or join in the different activities Amedee has to offer. Climb the 241 steps of the lighthouse for a marvelous view over the lagoon. Stroll through the island or snorkel among the fish - a wonderful experience as Amedee is a marine reserve. Learn about the local marine life aboard a glass-bottom boat. A barrier reef inhabited by turtles and stingrays is only a half hour away. There is also a playground for children.
The West Coast of Nouméa is considered cattle country, so saddle up and explore the secluded beach or misty mountain range on the back of a horse, cowboy style.
It's easy to imagine what exploring this natural beauty was like for ancient tribes. It's even easier when you paddle down the peaceful rivers on a traditional Melanesian outrigger canoe.
Just like everything else on the island, the conditions are perfect for windsurfing. The Bay of Anse Vata and Cote Blanche are hot spots for the locals and world competitors alike. Grab a board and join them.
The stylish boutiques in New Caledonia sell everything "French" from clothing and perfume to handbags and wine. Think of it as a Parisian shopping experience with palm trees.
You won't have any problems finding a delicious meal - this is a French island after all. Don't be surprised to find bougna on the menu. It's a local specialty of fish or chicken covered in banana leaves and roasted over hot rocks.
The currency in New Caledonia is the French Franc (CFP).
