Meet Our Padi Dive Instructors

From the Bahamas to the Great Barrier Reef, our PADI-certified dive instructors have explored fascinating underwater worlds all around the globe. And they’re eager to share their passion for diving with you.

Jonathan Forbes

Jonny is from South Africa and has been diving since he was 13. He has experience in baited shark dives and 3 years of teaching experience in adverse diving conditions. He has a passion for all marine related things and loves sharing his experiences while diving around the world.

Tara Murphy

Originally from the UK, Tara has spent the last decade teaching scuba diving. It has taken her to amazing places including Australia, South Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean to name but a few! One of her passions is underwater photography and finding those small and unusual critters!

Ulises Dominguez

Since his childhood Ulises has been free diving and amazed by the underwater world. Ulises started SCUBA diving back in the 90’s and decided to become an instructor to help others to achieve his same. Ulises has always been worried about environmental issues with coral reef, and started working with the Reef-Ball Foundation and National Marine Park in Cancun Mexico. Helping to create awareness about sharks and coral reef became my motto in diving.

Ben Shuttleworth

Ben is from the UK and has been a PADI Instructor since 2012. He has taught diving in Thailand, Indonesia, and Mexico and now with Royal Caribbean.  When he is not exploring the underwater world he is normally travelling to new countries. One unusual fact about him: he was part of a unique underwater Guinness World Record.  The largest pyramid of divers underwater which involved 60 divers.

Ewelina Heil

Ewelina is a dive instructor, marine biologist and oceanographer. She really enjoys teaching diving and helping certified divers to acquire additional skills and knowledge. She always tries to encourage divers and not-yet-divers to explore the underwater world in a responsible and sustainable way.

Daisy Beresford-Slinn

Since completing her open water course when she was 13 years old, Daisy always aspired to become a dive instructor. She is from England but for the past 5 years has been travelling while teaching in various countries around South East Asia and Qatar. She is now teaching in the Caribbean on board our ships. She looks forward to sharing her passion with her students and introducing them to her favorite underwater world.

Marcela Rocha

Marcela is half Brazilian and half Spanish. As a PADI IDC Staff, she has been teaching since 2011 between South America and Europe.  Marcela loves to teach and see the way new divers learn to dive, respecting the marine life and “breathing better” underwater.  She loves sharks and feeds this passion diving in the Nassau purple waters.

Katrina Clough

Katrina has been diving since she was 14 years old. In 2016 she became a dive instructor. Teaching other’s the ability to breathe and explore the underwater world is one of Katrina’s passions. She is from sunny Scotland, one of her favorite dive spots is in Nusa Penida, Indonesia where she spotted a school of 20+ manta rays!

Nishchay Phatak

Nish has been diving since 2010 and became a dive instructor in 2014. His most memorable experience was diving in the only volcano in India, Barren Island, with 14 devil rays gliding beneath him and a manta ray just above.

Paul Ancla

Paul loves the underwater world. His favorite places to dive are in South East Asia and Caribbean. He enjoys underwater photography, travel and loves meeting people around the world. Paul did his first scuba diving in 1996 and has been in love with the sport ever since. His passion is to introduce others to scuba diving and share the love for our ocean.

Georgi Dimitrov

When Georgi graduated from high-school, his leading teacher gave him a questionnaire to fill-in. One of the questions was which profession he would choose, and he answered that he wanted to be a diver. Now 10 years later he is proud to be part of Royal Caribbean’s dive team. He has been working as a dive instructor in Denmark, Cyprus, Maldives and Sri Lanka. He started to dive because he wanted to be close to sharks; now after many shark encounters he dives because of the silence found underwater. There are many places to discover under and above the water and all of them are on his list.

Rene Cicero

Rene’s passion for diving began in 2010 and as the passion to being underwater took hold, he built up his career diving the East and West coasts, and unique underground cenotes and cave systems of Mexico, his home nation; and later, in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Now as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer with a passion for marine conservation; one of Rene’s career highlights is his recent volunteer work in the Philippines, taking part in an Oceanic research project on large marine vertebrates, focusing primarily on Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. His life as of now is to teach and inspire others to dive and to vacation where he can dive, some of the best spots of which have been the WW2 wrecks in Busuanga and observing the incredible pelagic life in the Sea of Cortez.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PADI stand for?

PADI® stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors®, the global leader in scuba diving education.

What does scuba stand for?

Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. The first commercially successful scuba sets were the Aqualung twin hose open-circuit units developed by Emile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1943, in which compressed air carried in back mounted cylinders is inhaled through a demand regulator and then exhaled into the water adjacent to the tank.

How can I book a PADI Open Water Course or a scuba diving tour?

Tours can be reserved before you sail on Cruise Planner, the online booking tool, or onboard the ship. We recommend booking in advance, as early as possible, as space is limited. PADI Open Water Diver Course can only be booked precruise due to the learning portion of the course, which there isn’t adequate time for once onboard.

How do you learn to scuba dive in the PADI Open Water Diver Course?

Scuba certification includes three phases:

  1. Knowledge Development — From the comfort of your home, you’ll learn the basic principles of scuba diving by reading it in the PADI Open Water Diver Manual, either using PADI Touch on a tablet, or online with PADI eLearning®. At the end of each chapter, you’ll answer questions about the material to ensure you understand it. At the end of the course, you’ll take a final exam that ensures you have thorough knowledge of scuba diving basics. PADI Open Water Diver Course must be booked pre-cruise to allow for adequate time for knowledge development.
  2. Confined Water Dives — You’ll develop basic scuba skills in a pool. The basic scuba skills you learn during your certification course will help you become familiar with your scuba gear and become an underwater explorer.
  3. Open Water Dives — After your confined water dives, you’ll head to “open water,” where you and your instructor will make four dives, usually over two days. On these dives you’ll get to explore the underwater world. You’ll apply the skills you learned in confined water while enjoying what the local environment has to offer.
How long does it take to get certified?

The great benefit to getting certified through Royal Caribbean is that it can be conveniently accomplished during your cruise, with immediate opportunity to practice your new skills.

How much does the PADI OPEN WATER DIVER course cost?

What are the requirements for learning how to scuba dive?

If you have a passion for excitement and adventure, chances are you can become an avid PADI scuba diver. You’ll also want to keep in mind the following requirements.

  • The minimum age is 12 years old
  • All student divers complete a brief scuba medical questionnaire regarding health conditions that might pose problems while diving. If any of these apply to you, your doctor must, as a safety precaution, assess the condition as it relates to diving and sign a medical form that confirms you’re fit to dive. The PADI Medical Form can be found by clicking here.
  • Before completing the PADI Open Water Diver course, your instructor will have you demonstrate basic water skills to be sure you’re comfortable in the water, including: – Swim 200 meters/yards (or 300 meters/yards in mask, fins and snorkel) without stopping. There is no time limit for this, and you may use any swimming strokes you want. – Float and tread water for 10 minutes, again using any methods you want.
  • Each diver must have a personal set of the learning materials for use during the course and for reference after the course.
