Royal Caribbean's community outreach program enables cruise guests to participate in meaningful community volunteer work. St. John is mostly national park land and a vibrant community is spread throughout the whole island (about the size of Manhattan).
There are many ways to help maintain and improve this protected, but fragile Virgin Island which has limited resources. The island is very diverse and has a culturally cross-sectional population and community. Laurence Rockefeller was the first “voluntourist”. He came to St. John as a visitor and became vital in establishing the National Park through his philanthropy. While enjoying the beauty of this island, its vast areas of undeveloped historical sites, plantations and trails, you will achieve satisfaction knowing you have contributed towards a National Site and its local sub-structure, which will endear you to have pride that you have helped keep this island pristine.
Two groups of volunteers will take on various tasks to help the island, including coastal management, trail upkeep, eco-education, reforestation, community service, and maintenance. A boxed sandwich lunch will also be provided. Either roast beef and cheddar cheese or roast turkey with swiss cheese sandwich along with chips, fruit, water and a granola bar.
The price of the tour includes materials needed for the various projects and transportation to the sites. The remaining proceeds of the sale of the tour will be donated to this organization to fund future voluntourism endeavors. Celebrity Cruises and the local tour operator do not benefit financially from this tour.
