Nature and History Tour of Port Canaveral - PC51

From it's proximity to Space Exploration to the nature & wildlife, and a fish house and working dock where over thousands of pounds of seafood are caught each year! As we depart the cruise pier we will head a short distance to the Air Force Space & Missile History Center. Here you will learn about where the spirit of space exploration began and our nation learned how to defend itself in a cold war.

The History Center features exhibits highlighting every launch complex on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Among the larger artifacts on display are Titan and Atlas rocket engines and nose cones from Jupiter and Pershing missiles.
As you continue on the tour, the next stop are the Canaveral Locks. Build in 1965, the Canaveral Locks, which connect Port Canaveral to the Banana River, is the largest navigation lock in Florida. It is used by pleasure crafts to get between the ocean and the river, and for the past 30 years was also used after every shuttle launch in the transport of the shuttle booster rockets that fell into the ocean after liftoff and were returned to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station via Port Canaveral. The Lock is a magnet for fish and birds and on any given day you will see: Brown Pelican, White Ibis, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, Wood Stork. Manatees and Dolphins are also often spotted frolicking in the water.

You will visit a fish house and working dock where over thousands of pounds of seafood are caught each year. Most importantly you will have access to the dock where one of Florida’s most unique, and known, species got its start; the Rock shrimp. For over four generations the Thompson family has provided Fresh Florida wild caught seafood to the public from this dock, one of the last of its kind. Learn about, not only, the history of this family but that of seafood, the oceans and of course the fishing village known as Port Canaveral!

Finally you will end your tour with a taste of the ever-delicious Rock Shrimp.  Don’t miss out on your opportunity to capture Southeast fishing village history.
