Begin your journey with a transfer from the ship's pier to the excavation site of Salona. Enjoy commentary on the most important excavation sight from the Roman times in Croatia. In contrast to busy Split it seems that time has stood still in Solin, the site of the ancient Salona. At the time of its greatest prosperity in the 3rd and 4th centuries, Salona had approximately 40,000 inhabitants while Split did not even exist. Archaeologists today have excavated remains of temples, amphitheatres, early Christian churches, burial grounds, and baths. At the conclusion of your tour through ancient Salona, continue with a ride along the beautiful Riviera of the Seven Castles toward the charming town of Trogir.
Trogir is situated on a tiny island and connected by a bridge to the mainland and a bridge to the larger island of Ciovo. Except for the green parks, the island is occupied by spectacular constructions of stone houses, palaces, churches, monasteries, walls, and towers. The streets are narrow and reminiscent of how life might have been in the old days. According to UNESCO,“Trogir is a precious, a consistent part of world heritage. But don’t look just for stone. Look for the mysterious spirit in stone. Look for all those architects, builders, artists, patrons, for all those stories hidden in the history of stone”. Trogir is known as a ‘monument town’. Follow your guide to visit some of the most famous sites including the Cathedral of St Lawrence, the Kamerlengo Fortress, the Town Gate, the Church of St Nicholas, a museum, a picture gallery, and the ‘Kairos’ art collection.
Proceed with your guide to the main attraction in Trogir, the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. The 13th century building is the finest example of sacral architecture in Croatia. The unusual construction with three naves and three semi circular apses dominates the town. The main portal carved by the local artist “Radovan” in the 13th century is world famous. Continue past the Town Loggia, the Town Hall and the Cipiko Palace before enjoying free time for shopping or independent exploration. At the designated time and place, rejoin your guide and coach for return transfer to the pier.
