Your tour begins with a drive along the Maritime Promenade to the Bellver Castle, one of the most unique examples of Gothic civil architecture in Mallorca. Not far from the center of the city, the castle of the “beautiful views” watches over the port and was built by Jaume II at the beginning of the 14th century. It was originally conceived as a defensive redoubt and royal residence and later became a prison during the middle ages until the Civil War. Among many others, the enlightenment encyclopaedist Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was a prisoner here for six years. Only four months after Jovellanos got out, the young French physicist François Arago had his adventure in the castle. You’ll visit the exterior of the castle and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
Proceed to Parque del Mar to visit the Cathedral which frames the silhouette of the city. Constructed between the 13th and the 14th centuries, it is one of the finest pure Gothic examples of the continent.
Next to it stands the Almudaina Palace, a monument which was converted from an Arab fortress into the residence of the Kings of Mallorca. Your guide will highlight the most important aspects of this monument from the outside.
Next, you will visit the bullring. Perfectly constructed, the bullring has four main boxes oriented to the cardinal points. Time permitting; you will have approximately 15 minutes of free time to shop. At the end of your tour, you’ll rejoin the coach for the return drive to the ship.
