Panoramic North Shetland & Eshaness Cliffs - WK12

Discover the rugged land and seascapes, agricultural areas, hamlets, villages and the island's famous ponies from the comfort of the motor coach. Your route will take you across the narrow strip of land at Mavis Grind where the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean seem to meet and cut the Mainland Shetland in two.

Watch closely as Mainland Shetland’s cultural heritage and natural beauty come to life on a four-hour motor coach trip past rural villages to see historic Scalloway Castle and discover the volcanic topography of Eshaness Cliffs. Take off from bustling Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, and travel across undulating knolls where Shetland ponies spend their days. Enjoy a quick photo stop at Scalloway Castle, where you’ll hear about the legacy of tenants that once lived in this roofless tower house built in 1600. You’ll then pass the sleepy seaside hamlet of Voe and the peaceful fishing village of Brae before riding across Mavis Grind. This narrow isthmus connects the Northmavine peninsula to the rest of Mainland Shetland, and here you can see where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Learn about the Norse origins of lands surrounding St. Magnus Bay before making your final stop at Eshaness Cliffs. Witness the powerful blowholes spewing North Atlantic waters and admire the steep oceanfront bluffs that were shaped by layers of lava and pyroclastic rock formed from a long extinct volcano. Head back to port feeling well connected to Shetland’s history and unique landscapes.
