Full Description:
The Rock of Gibraltar was once one of the Pillars of Hercules and was an important military stronghold for centuries as it guarded the entrance to the Mediterranean. Your tour begins with a drive to the border of the Spanish Frontier, where you'll cross the airfield and have an excellent view of the Rock of Gibraltar and the Cross of Sacrifice from the mini-bus. You’ll stop to visit St. Michael's Cave and enjoy free time to explore the unusual stalagmite and stalactite formations on your own.
Proceed to Apes' Den, home of the famous Barbary apes. Here, you'll see the unique creatures which were thought to have arrived on the Iberian Peninsula from North Africa. Be careful when viewing the apes as they have a penchant for handbags, purses, cameras, and hats. Next, you’ll visit Europa Point for a photo opportunity of the lighthouse and, on a clear day, the northern coast of Africa. Rejoin your mini-bus and enjoy the view as you ascend the 1,400-foot high Rock of Gibraltar via narrow roads that were originally built to support the British troops who defended this territory.
Before returning to the ship, you will pass the Moorish Castle while descending Willis Road. At the end of your tour, you will have the option to return to the ship or stay in town to take advantage of the duty free shops and make your own way back to the ship.
