Full Description:
Begin your archaeological adventure with a drive through the city center. Continue into the countryside and pass the lakes where flamingos make their home. En route to the historic Roman city of Nora, your tour will make a short visit to the village of Pula.
Approximately three thousand years ago, Nora was an important Phoenician colony and port. The city was ruled by the Carthaginians from the third to fifth century B.C. When Rome occupied Sardinia in 238 BC, Nora became an important outpost and grew into one of the island’s main cities. Facing east and sheltered from the cold winds, Nora occupied an ideal location. Over time the city was buried and remained so until 1952. A few ruins, such as the theater, were the only visible monuments. Excavation began in 1952 and continued thru 1960. Over three hectares, approximately seven-and-a half acres of ruins, were uncovered. Since 1960, additional excavation has revealed more of the city.
