Furnas Lake with gothic outline of the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitorias reflected in its limpid water, offers volcanic fumaroles and authentic natural kitchens along its margins - a real encounter with nature.
The walk begins at Furnas Valley and ends at Furnas Hot Springs. This is one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, with 22 thermal springs. Walking on easy unpaved roads and trails, you will pass through dense and lush vegetation and also arrive at beautiful viewpoints. The scent of sulphur mingles with the perfume of flowers, and the cold, transparent waters of the streams mix with the boiling water, made golden by the iron in the water. The land surrounding Furnas Lake where farms and pastures predominate, is dominated by the great slopes of the volcanic crater. Fields are edged with Japanese red cedars, hydrangeas and the kahiki ginger. Finally you reach Furnas Hot Springs, an area of diverse volcanic activity where water and mud geysers spout and boil. This is where the famous Cozido Furnas is cooked for six hours in the hot volcanic soil. Return by coach to Ponta Delgada.
Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 2 miles (approximately 1.5 hour) over various terrain and surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. This tour is not recommended for guests who experience walking difficulties.
