At the East of the island is an enormous crater and luxuriant garden in an extravagant atmosphere where the color of the flowers mixes with vegetation originating from diverse continents. In the picturesque village of Furnas, the Terra Nostra Park was planted by Thomas Hickling in the 18th century. Pico do Ferro is surrounded by exuberant vegatation and traversed by waterfalls. This belvedere gives a dazzling panorama over the Furnas Valley. Furnas Hot Springs is an area of diverse volcanic activity where water and mus geysers spout and boil.
Leaving Ponta Delgada, the tour proceeds along the sea front to one of the main Pineapple Plantations, where the system of cultivating and marketing this fruit will be explained. A Pineapple liquore will be offered to the passengers.
Continuing to cross the island, in a North-East direction, the itinerary highlights the most important agricultural areas of the north coast, before you reach the small town of Ribeira Grande. The Island’s centuries old history and strong Portuguese flavour, can be found in abundance, in this oldest and largest city on the north coast.
From Ribeira Grande, you proceed along the north coast, passing en route Santa Iria Belvedere and the Tea Plantation at Gorreana before arriving at the summit of Pico do Ferro Belvedere which overlooks the magnificent Furnas Valley. You will have the opportunity of admiring the wonderful view of the Valley.
Before lunch, which will be served at a leading hotel, you shall have the opportunity to visit the unforgetable Terra Nostra Park, with its remarkable subtropical flora.
After lunch and before beginning your return to Ponta Delgada, you will visit the Hot Springs, which are natural sources of mineral and thermal waters. This is probably the most interesting natural phenomenon in the Azores, 23 mineral springs spewing forth hot waters in a sulphur - laden atmosphere.
The return to Ponta Delgada will be via the south road and passes by Vila Franca do Campo, a picturesque village that at one time was the capital of the Island.
