Furnas Valley - PG03
At the East of the island is an enormous crater and luxuriant garden in an extravagant atmosphere where the colour of the flowers mixes with the exuberant vegetation originating from diverse continents. In the picturesque village of Furnas, the Terra Nostra Park, which was planted by Thomas Hickling in the 18th century. Pico do Ferro is surrounded by exuberant vegetation and traversed by waterfalls. This belvedere gives a dazzling panorama over the Furnas Valley. Furnas Hot Springs is an area of diverse volcanic activity where water and mud geysers spout and boil.
On this tour you will drive through Ponta Delgada towards Northeast along pleasant roads bordered with Japanese Cedars, Hydrangeas and Ginger Lilies until we reach Ribeira Grande. Here in this unique North City with a strong feeling of the Portuguese influence. A stop of about 20 minutes will be made for a guided visit to the city centre. Then the tour will proceed to Pico do Ferro Belvedere, a look out point, which gives you panoramic view over the Furnas Valley.
Descend into the Valley to explore Terra Nostra Garden. Developed over the centuries the garden contains an extensive number of trees from all over the world, as well as, a serpentine canal, grottoes, camellias, ferns and cycas.
Following this visit we will head to Furnas Hot Springs, one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, with 22 thermal springs.
The return to Ponta Delgada will be via Vila Franca do Campo, the former capital of the island.
