You will stop at St Maurice Bay to get a close look at the traditional wood carvings that surround a religious monument that commemorates the arrival of the island’s founding Marist brothers.
Next explore the Lady of the Assumption Church, followed by a visit to St Joseph’s bay, home of the traditional sailing outriggers made from columnar pine or merbau.
Drive north past numerous yam plantations toward the Touete tribe home of the “Grotto of the Queen Hortense”. Once you arrive take a gentle stroll through a tropical forest garden. A pathway will lead you to the front entrance of a giant limestone cave that was once used to refuge a young girl who would one day become the Queen of the Isle of Pines.
