Overview:

A must-do excursion for lovers of wildlife, especially birds. Enjoy a guided tour of the Parc Zoologique et Forestier, a zoo and sanctuary whose 85 acres are home to an array of the South Pacific flora and fauna.

Full Description:

Travel from the ship via an air conditioned motor coach through the city center before you begin to climb the road overlooking the capital city of Noumea. You’ll enjoy panoramic city and sea views en route and at your destination, the Parc Zoologique et Forestier, perched 548 feet above sea level in the mountains that line the western coast of New Caledonia.

Founded in 1972, the park is comprised of 85 acres of so-called dry forest, which, despite its name, supports significant number of plant, reptile, animal and bird species. Approximately 20 acres are open to visitors, offering a window onto New Caledonia’s renowned biodiversity. The park’s many ponds and lakes are homes to a large variety of wild and endemic birds.

Upon arrival at the park, you’ll set off at any easy pace along walkways, accompanied by your guide, who will provide commentary about South Pacific flora and fauna in this peaceful setting.

Among the many species you may see is the Cagou, a flightless native bird that is an endangered species and a symbol of New Caledonia. The bird’s call is often mistaken for that of a barking dog.
