Overview:

Discover the unique characteristics of an endangered mangrove, one of the eco-systems that support New Caledonia’s renowned biodiversity, and view Noumea’s main sights on a coach tour.

Full Description:

From the pier, you’ll travel via air conditioned motor coach with your guide past the principal bays and beaches of Noumea and various city landmarks en route to the peninsula of Ouemo.

There you’ll explore a mysterious Caledonian mangrove by walking along a 400-meter long deck. During the 30-minute visit, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the tiny creatures that live there, including some whose existence has been dated to pre-historic eras, as well as the remarkable flora and other fauna that are part of the mangroves. These unique environments are under siege and there are efforts to protect them for their role in supporting unique ecosystems and in protecting coastlines.

After your walk, you’ll drive to the nearby Canons de Ouemo, where two big cannons are positioned overlooking the Baie de Magenta, with views out to the sea and across the Baie de Boulan and the mountain of Mont Dore. The canons were erected to protect Noumea from attacks from the east and southeast. Given the unlikely prospect that an enemy would approach the capital city from these directions, the canons have never been used but modern visitors can appreciate the lovely views of the lagoon and the bays.

The bus will return to the ship through Noumea’s oldest residential areas, where a number of colorful colonial houses with charming gardens still stand, and through the city center, with its mix of colonial-era and modern French architecture.
